Complete Home Security Checklist for Toronto Homeowners

Most burglaries in the GTA happen because of simple security oversights — a weak lock, an unlocked window, or poor lighting. Use this checklist to identify and fix vulnerabilities in your home security.

🔒 Locks & Doors

• ☐ Every exterior door has a deadbolt (not just a knob lock)
• ☐ Deadbolts have a minimum 1-inch throw bolt
• ☐ Strike plates are secured with 3-inch screws (not the short screws that come in the box)
• ☐ Door frames are solid — no signs of rot or splitting
• ☐ Sliding doors have a security bar or pin in the track
• ☐ Garage door has a deadbolt on the interior door to the house
• ☐ Locks are ANSI Grade 1 or Grade 2
• ☐ No spare keys hidden under mats, rocks, or planters

🪟 Windows

• ☐ All ground-floor windows have window locks
• ☐ Basement windows have window well covers or bars
• ☐ No trees or structures that give access to upper windows
• ☐ Window air conditioner units are secured from inside

📷 Cameras & Alarms

• ☐ At least one visible security camera covering the front door
• ☐ Doorbell camera to see who's at your door
• ☐ Security cameras cover all entry points and the driveway
• ☐ Camera footage is stored off-site (cloud or NVR in a locked room)

💡 Lighting & Visibility

• ☐ Motion-sensor lights on all exterior doors
• ☐ No dark spots around the perimeter of your home
• ☐ Timer or smart lights inside when you're away
• ☐ Hedges and bushes trimmed below window height

📱 Smart Security

• ☐ Smart locks with auto-lock enabled
• ☐ Smart home hub connected to locks, cameras, and sensors
• ☐ Door/window sensors that alert your phone when opened
• ☐ Wi-Fi network secured with WPA3 and a strong password
