As a licensed locksmith who installs hundreds of locks every year across the GTA, I see which locks hold up and which ones fail. Here are my honest recommendations for Canadian homes in 2025.

Best Deadbolts for Canadian Weather

1. Schlage B60N (Best Overall)

ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt that handles Canadian winters without freezing or stiffening. The anti-pick shield and reinforced strike plate make it extremely resistant to forced entry. Available at Home Depot and Lowe's for $60-$80. This is what I install in most homes.

2. Medeco Maxum (Best High-Security)

The gold standard for high-security residential locks. Patent-protected keys that can't be copied at hardware stores, pick-resistant angled pins, and drill-resistant hardened steel insert. $200-$300 but worth every penny if security is your top priority.

3. Weiser SmartKey (Best Budget)

ANSI Grade 2, easy to rekey yourself with the SmartKey tool. Not as pick-resistant as the Schlage or Medeco, but perfectly adequate for most homes. $40-$60.

Best Smart Locks for Canada

1. Schlage Encode Plus (Best Overall Smart Lock)

Built-in Wi-Fi (no hub needed), Apple HomeKit support, and the same ANSI Grade 1 security as their mechanical deadbolts. Works great in Canadian weather down to -35°C. $300-$350.

2. Yale Assure Lock 2 (Best Touchscreen)

Clean touchscreen design, multiple smart home integrations, and a reliable auto-lock feature. The Wi-Fi module is sold separately. $250-$300.

3. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (Best Retrofit)

Installs on the inside of your existing deadbolt — your door looks unchanged from outside. Great for renters. Auto-lock, remote access, and works with Alexa/Google/HomeKit. $250-$300.

Locks to AVOID in Canada

• Any lock without a Grade rating — unrated locks offer minimal security
• Kwikset standard (non-SmartKey) — older models are easily bumped
• Ultra-cheap smart locks from Amazon — poor weather sealing, short battery life, security vulnerabilities
• Spring-latch-only knob locks — these can be opened with a credit card
